Electrical Panel Upgrades in Suffolk County NY

Upgrade Your Home’s Electrical Capacity Safely

Your electrical panel controls how electricity flows throughout your home. As modern homes add more appliances, electronics, and electrical equipment, older panels often struggle to keep up with demand.

HomeOps Electric provides professional electrical panel upgrades throughout Suffolk County to help homeowners safely support modern electrical loads.

Upgrading your panel can help resolve common electrical problems such as frequent breaker trips, flickering lights, and limited space for new circuits. It also prepares your home for major electrical additions like EV chargers, standby generators, HVAC systems, and kitchen renovations.

If your home still operates on older 100 amp service, a panel upgrade may be one of the most important electrical improvements you can make.

Why Homes Need Electrical Panel Upgrades

Many homes built decades ago were designed for far lower electrical demand than today’s households require.

Common reasons homeowners upgrade their electrical panel include:

Increasing electrical capacity for modern appliances
🔌
Preparing for EV charger installation
🔋
Installing a standby generator
🏠
Adding new circuits during renovations
⚠️
Replacing outdated or unsafe electrical panels
🔁
Eliminating frequent breaker trips
🛡️
Improving electrical safety and reliability

A properly sized electrical panel ensures your home can safely distribute electricity without overloading circuits or creating unsafe conditions.

100 Amp vs 200 Amp Electrical Panels

Many older homes in Suffolk County still operate with 100 amp service, which was once sufficient for basic electrical needs.

However, modern homes often require 200 amp service to support:

❄️
HVAC systems
🍳
Electric ranges and ovens
🔌
EV chargers
💻
Home offices
🧺
Laundry appliances
♨️
Hot tubs or pools
🔋
Standby generators

Upgrading from a 100 amp panel to a 200 amp panel provides the electrical capacity necessary to support modern living without constantly pushing circuits to their limits.

Great experience with HomesOps Electric. Craig came out late at night after PSEG accidentally cut half the power to our house with a shovel, and he couldn’t have been more helpful. He took the time to clearly explain what was going on, made sure everything was safe, and helped us understand next steps.
What really stood out was that he came back the next day to follow up and get more information from PSEG so we had a full picture of what happened. That level of care and follow-through is rare.

Would absolutely use them again and highly recommend.

I was very pleased with the work that Jacob, and Nicholas completed. They were responding to a request to help dealing with the 9 volt battery type of hard wired smoke detector. Jacob is a well informed technician and precise teacher regarding codes and different types of detectors.
Both technicians were polite and professional.
The billing department is another story. The software they use does not provide a breakdown of materials and labor costs.
I had an issue with the receipt. My final payment was incorrect. Craig was very helpful in addressing the problem.
Response from the owner:Thank you for your feedback, Joanne. It's great to hear that you were pleased with the work Jacob and Nicholas completed, and that their professionalism and knowledge made a positive impression. We appreciate your comments about the billing department as well. We're always looking to improve our processes and your input is invaluable. If you have any further questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out.
Project done quickly and efficiently; everything is explained in detail. Staff is courteous and professional. Very pleased with the outcome. Highly recommend.

Electrical Panel Upgrade FAQ

How do I know if I need an electrical panel upgrade?

Common signs include frequent breaker trips, flickering lights, limited breaker space, warm breakers, or difficulty supporting modern appliances. Homes with older 100 amp service may also require an upgrade when adding EV chargers, HVAC systems, or new circuits.

What is the difference between a 100 amp and 200 amp electrical panel?

A 100 amp panel was common in older homes but often struggles to support modern electrical demand. A 200 amp panel provides significantly more capacity, allowing your home to safely power large appliances, HVAC systems, EV chargers, and additional circuits.

Is a 200 amp electrical panel upgrade worth it?

For many homeowners, yes. A 200 amp panel upgrade improves electrical capacity, reduces the risk of overloaded circuits, and prepares your home for modern electrical needs such as electric vehicles, standby generators, and home expansions.

Can I install an EV charger with a 100 amp panel?

Sometimes, but not always. Many homes require a panel upgrade before installing a Level 2 EV charger. An electrician will evaluate your existing electrical load and determine whether your panel has enough available capacity.

How long does an electrical panel upgrade take?

Most electrical panel upgrades can be completed in one day. However, the timeline may vary depending on the condition of the existing wiring, permit requirements, and whether additional electrical work is needed.

Will a panel upgrade improve electrical safety?

Yes. Upgrading an outdated or overloaded electrical panel helps reduce the risk of overheating wires, breaker failures, and electrical hazards. Modern panels are designed to handle higher electrical demand and meet current safety codes.

Do I need a permit for an electrical panel upgrade?

Yes. Electrical panel upgrades typically require permits and inspections to ensure the installation meets local electrical codes. Licensed electricians handle the permitting process and ensure the work passes inspection.

Can a panel upgrade support a standby generator?

Yes. Many homeowners upgrade their panel when installing a standby generator to ensure the electrical system can properly distribute backup power during outages.

Average Electrical Panel Upgrade Cost

Electrical panel upgrade costs in Long Island can vary depending on your home, electrical system, and the amount of work required. Below are typical ranges homeowners can expect based on common upgrade scenarios.

Standard 200-Amp Upgrade
$1,500 – $7,500
Full-Service Replacement / Heavy-Capacity Upgrade
$7,500 – $15,000+
Actual pricing depends on factors such as panel location, existing wiring, service upgrades, permit requirements, and overall electrical demand. A professional evaluation ensures you get the right solution for your home.
